So, you’ve discovered you’re a witch and now you’ve found yourself staring into your closet asking yourself, “how does a witch dress? Do I need to wear a pointed hat? Can we only wear black? What are the rules?! WHICH WITCH IS WHICH?!”
Have no fear! I am under-qualified and I am here! Because who better to teach the under-qualified than the under-qualified themselves?! – that was rhetorical, don’t answer that.
Right! So, let’s start with a tiny introduction:
Hi! My name is Bijan, I am 24 years old (secretly I’m an 800 year old bog witch, but who’s counting right?) and I was raised by a woo-woo mother who taught me Tarot, the Craft, and pretty much everything I know. I have always loved clothing and dressing up. To me, clothing is like a costume, an expression not only of who you are, but who you want to be. I also happen to believe that above all else, clothing should be comfortable and there is no shame in going to work in your pajamas. I have a background in theatre, modeling, and an intermediate certificate in life;
Let’s start by myth-busting some common misconceptions:
- Do you need to wear a pointed hat to be a witch/ dress witchy? ABSOLUTELY NOT. But you totally can 😉 I do sometimes, when it matches the outfit!
- Do you have to wear all black? NOPE. There are so many wonderful versions of “witchy aesthetic” and many color pallets that you can choose from.
- Do I have to wear one of those star-circle things? (Pentacles/ Pentagrams) NOPE, think of wearing a pentacle more as a spiritual or religious choice based on your own personal held beliefs. Definitely not mandatory, and personally I would say to NOT wear one unless it has deep meaning to you.
Okay, so where’s a good place to start? I HIGHLY recommend Pinterest. I honestly recommend Pinterest to everyone. I have so many Pinterest boards, and yes, I also have a specific board entitled “Witchy Style” … I should probably make that board public for the rest of you!
Another great place to start is by finding characters in TV shows whose aesthetic you enjoy and would like to incorporate into your wardrobe. Myself personally I draw inspiration from:
- STEVIE NICKS *cough cough* Stevie Nicks…
- Anne with an E
- Practical Magic (duh!)
- Buffy The Vampire Slayer
- Howls Moving Castle
- Kiki’s Delivery Service
- Charmed (the 90’s original!)
- Hocus Pocus
I usually start each morning (or the evening before} by asking myself 3 important questions:
- Who do I want to be? What do I want to embody/ emulate?
- What is my comfort level today? Loose or snug?
- Is there one specific piece of clothing or jewelry I want to build around?
Of course it’s also important to take into account any outside environmental factors you might have like weather, activity, and the undead – just kidding on that last one 😉
So! Without further ado, let’s get dressed up!
